The Taranis is a pseudo-Juno weapon featured in Fuga: Melodies of Steel. It is first found by Mei Marzipan within a mountain's cave in "How It All Began", while the in-game story instead has the children of Petit Mona find it through the radio.

Structure
The Taranis is an incredibly large tank that is capable of housing about 12 individuals at a time. It has multiple rooms that all survival basics for its inhabitants. This includes a workshop, bedroom, messroom, observation area, and a farming area that's capable of growing food & housing two livestock.

  +
The Fuga: Melodies of Steel manga is a series that, initially, retells the main story of the original game up until the aftermath of the battle against Pretzel. The rest of the manga will delve deeper into characters & present new scenes. It is illustrated by mangaka Takafumi Adachi.
Its size completely overshadows the majority of other military vehicles that are seen throughout the Free Lands of Gasco, even almost pummeling a few tanks belonging to the Berman Empire. The caterpillar tracks have no trouble traversing through most terrains and can even potentially plow through villages.

  +
Serialization began on December 13th, 2021, with each chapter being uploaded to Famitsu's website for free viewing every two weeks. KADOKAWA will publish volumes as ebooks. It is currently only available in Japanese. The last chapter of the original game was released in June 6, 2023.
<u>Radio</u>
Inside the Taranis is an old-fashioned radio that serves as a form of communication for Jeanne's other half. Through it, she encourages the children to keep moving forward and sometimes insists on utilizing the Soul Cannon.

  +
The manga will also adapt the events of the sequel in the next two volumes. The first chapter was released in July 4, 2023.
<u>Climbing Claws</u>
The Taranis has claws in its treads that allow it to stick to steep surfaces and unstable terrain.

<u>Shields</u>
+
Summary
  +
The story begins where the game does - When Petit Mona is invaded by the Berman Empire. Malt Marzipan along with the other children of the village follow their radio's instructions of finding & riding the Taranis.
The Taranis has powerful shields that allow it to defend against attacks. They manifest as a beehive barrier in the front of the tank. Those shields can vastly reduce the damage of anything that hits them, including even the Managarm.

  +
As the children ward off Berman soldiers they come face-to-face with General Pretzel, the man who had lead the mission to destroying their village. As the battle swiftly shifts to the general's favor, Boron Brioche moseys down to the Soul Cannon chamber, ending up as the sacrifice that evaporates the opposing soldiers & Pretzel. As the rest of the crew discovers what had just unfolded they become too depressed to move on, ending up in the tank's catastrophic explosion.
<u>Soul Cannon</u>
The most powerful component of the Taranis is the Soul Cannon, which requires the sacrifice of a living being for utilization. It can only be used when she and her crew are in extreme danger.

  +
Jeanne, the tank's AI, reverts time (AKA conducting one of her simulations) to the moment before the battle. Now more collected, the crew take a more tactical approach to thwarting Pretzel and succeed. The game's plot ends right after revealing Shvein Hax and his plans to awaken Vanargand, as the perspective shifts to a mysterious being, who calls themselves the "Maestro", overseeing every single event through digital monitors.
To activate the Soul Cannon, a sacrifice must ready themselves into the basement's Soul Cannon Chamber which holds a single seat. When its door opens it releases what sounds like screams and cries of past sacrifices. Once the sacrifice is seated and closed in, Jeanne announces a brace for shock and activates its auto target function. Tendrils of bio-energy flow from the weapon's mount. The Soul Cannon rotates, first to assemble itself into a vertical shape, and then to aim in the same direction as the Taranis' front weapons. Once it does this, the bio-energy tendrils spread all over the weapon, which extends its fluted barrel and starts glowing, On the crew's prompt, the weapon fires a massive beam of light, with enough strength to push the Taranis backwards. Depending on the source of the bio-energy that charges the Soul Cannon, the tendrils and beam can have varied colors.

  +
This "maestro" presents Fuga as if it were a musical performance and welcomes the reader to the next "Melodies of Steel".
While Fuga: Melodies of Steel presents the chamber as swiftly disintegrating its sacrifice, its manga exposes the entire process to be extremely brutal and violent. Once the door shuts, sacrifices will first be impaled by multiple barbed tendrils before melting to death and ultimately disappearing within its bright light.

  +
The story resumes to following the game's up until chapter 11, where the plot reveals Wappa Charlotte early with two other unknown caninu children in a Berman tank. When one of the children asks Wappa what they need to do, she responds by mentioning orders given to them by the Berman to strike the Gasco Army. Instead of choosing violence, however, she suggests to instead pursue them with "love & peace". As Wappa emerges from the tank, she's seen sporting a Berman uniform. The "maestro" is shocked with this turn of events and tries to find out what happened, as Wappa was supposed to meet the other children when they knock her out of her treehouse.
It's possible to instead utilize a dummy to trick the Soul Cannon into firing, saving any living beings inside the Taranis from being put through a sacrifice.

  +
As he browses through the events that have unfolded, the "maestro" begins to suspect that Malt has something to do with this skewed timeline.
In both games, the Soul Cannon is sealed off most of the time and can only be used during boss fights. It can instantly destroy the boss if used. Unfortunately, the child sacrificed to fire it will be permanently killed in the process, leaving you with less crew for the Taranis. If all the children die due to this, the bad ending will be obtained. As his friends don't see him as a threat, the Soul Cannon cannot be used against Britz during the fight with him.

  +
The kids end up fighting Blutwurst but they are unable to do anything due to him keeping hostages, however Wappa comes and free them, revealing that she has betrayed the empire, now without a way to keep the kids at bay, Blutwurst is defeated, Wappa reveals that her platoon were actually the kids of her village that were forced to join the Berman Empire because their parents were keep as hostages, when Malt reveals the reason they are fighting, Wappa joins them but declares herself as the leader. After rescuing Sheena's family, the crew ends up finding Britz on the road, despite being a Berman, Sheena pleads to her friends to let him join, only to be interrupted by the arrival of the Tarascus.
The second game adds a cruel twist to the Soul Cannon once it becomes accessible. If the Taranis suffers severe damage, Hax will randomly select one of the children except for Malt and Vanilla, and feed them to the Soul Cannon to ensure the rest's survival, triggering a 20 turn countdown that will kill both the child and the boss if the latter isn't defeated before it runs out. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent tragedy.

  +
The timeline skews further as not only do the children confront Hax and the Tarascus, but face a rematch with Flam simultaneously. With the entire crew overwhelmed with what's to come, Malt swiftly goes downstairs to the Soul Cannon without informing anybody. He takes his seat and awaits his fate which becomes a brutal mutilation of his entire body. Once Malt becomes disintegrated in the chamber, the cannon takes aim and begins to charge. The Soul Cannon completely obliterates Flam, however Hax and the Tarascus survive and leave. The children discover that Malt has died in a bloody mess and mourn his death.
<u>Teleport</u>
The Taranis has the ability to teleport its crew to other places inside its structure. It can also be used to quickly load a sacrifice to the Soul Cannon chamber. This ability remained undiscovered by Malt and company until Jihl's hijacking of the tank. The teleportation manifests as a golden light engulfing its target. Unfortunately, it's vulnerable to failing in disastrous ways if the tank takes severe damage while someone's teleporting.

  +
After this gruesome event, the Maestro celebrates ending the anomaly coming from Malt. This is cut short when a Caninu man resembling Carmine, who is also dressed similarly to Quynne, manages to enter his room via a portal gun. The Maestro and this mysterious Caninu appear so share a sour relationship, with the former angrily calling him a "bastard". As the Maestro attempts an escape, the Caninu uses his portal gun to tear his legs apart which then slowly re-materialize. During this, the Caninu uses a Dummy Sacrifice to reverse Malt's death. He then swiftly exits the room, leaving the Maestro is an extremely distressed state.
<u>Self-Repair Systems</u>
The Taranis is able to regenerate, but the process is slow without assistance. When Jihl stole the tank, he was able to vastly enhance the ability's strength, which makes it engulf the Taranis in a glowing golden aura and quickly repairs any damage it may have suffered.

  +
The timeline still proceeds from the grim scene at the Soul Cannon's chamber. However, Malt returns in one piece as if nothing had happened, surprising the rest of the crew who were fully convinced he had died. While Malt still has a faint memory of what had occurred in the chamber, he and the other children get back on track. The story fast-forwards to the moment Jin Macchiato confronts Britz Strudel over a broken piece of the Taranis. At the beggining Jin thinks that Britz is planning to sabotage the Taranis, only for Socks to reveal that he's being helping him on fixing the Taranis, Jin apologizes much to Britz's embarrasment, but for the relief of the other kids.
<u>Jihl</u>
  +
The kids arrive to Paresia, where the Gasco Army is doing an evacution for the citizens, the kids arrive but is too late, Hax has awakened the Vanargand and start using it to destroy Gasco, here the radio reveal the reason is been leading the kids, to destroy it's ancient enemy, the kids are terrified but it causes Jeanne to regain her complete form, despite the initial confusion, Jeanne start telling her story, revealing that she was a product from an organization creating weapons for a war, making artificial humans to use as batteries for them.
A Hybrid child, who Jeanne refers as her "counterpart" in her archives, is stored deep inside the Taranis. He was only found when Jeanne sought an alternative way to fire the Soul Cannon in Fuga<nowiki/>'s best ending. He was created by Crusade as a reusable power source for the Soul Cannon so that the Taranis could fire without killing anyone, at the cost of Jihl's mental health suffering massive damage due to the experiments required to ensure his survival. His connection to the Taranis also allowed him to hijack it and brainwash its crew, setting up the events of Fuga 2.

  +
After telling the kids everything, they enter Vanargand and start the final battle against Hax, who unfortunaly has the upper hand in the battle, causing Jeanne to use a weapon that according to her slowly drains the life force of the kids, during the scuffle, Malt starts to remember how he gave up his life to the Soul Cannon, and decides to do it again, however the other kids refuse to do it, and tell Malt that they won't allow it, this cause Jeanne to discover that there is someone alive in a room apart inside the Taranis, and uses it to power up the Soul Cannon, hurting the being inside, during the last shot against Hax, Malt briefly gains a wolf-like form to the surprise of Jeanne, after putting down Hax, the kids reunite with their families, while Jeanne shuts down alongside the Taranis.
<u>Exo-Taranis</u>
At the end of the second game's third chapter, Jihl abandons the Taranis for the Belenos and severely damages it and the Tarascus with its weapons. When this leads to Hanna's body being destroyed by the teleportation failure, Malt and his friends are so furious and horrified that their grief awakened something within the Taranis, which made it absorb the remains of the Tarascus and fused them both into an entirely new shape: the Exo-Taranis. This evolved form of the tank has all of the original's abilities, while also gaining access to the Tarascus' Managarm. Hax's AI also ends up being a part of the Exo-Taranis and gains control over its teleporter and the Soul Cannon.

  +
The kids enjoy the peace caused by the armstice made by both Gasco and Berman during a whole year, however both Malt and Mei are called by Muscat to investigate some weird stuff happening recently.
History
  +
In some unknown location the same Caninu man from before alongside a Felineko woman and other two male Caninus, are watching a ship crashing down, talking about how their plan is going as they expected, with them planing to use Malt for an unknown purpose.
<u>The Era of Humanity</u>
The Taranis was first made in the tumultuous final era of humanity. With the rise of the Titano-Machina, many nations sought to find a way to fight against them without collateral damage. This led to a secret anti-Juno organization known as Crusade creating the Taranis to counter Juno-based weapons. Per its original specifications, the Taranis was designed to be crewed by Hybrid children, many of which were victims of horrific experiments. One of Crusade's engineers, a woman known by some of the Hybrids as "Mama", created an artificial intelligence in her own image, to lead the Taranis to victory and to protect its crew. That AI was called Jeanne.

  +
Meanwhile, in another place, a child used by the Taranis remembers what happened in the fight against the Tarascus, planning revenge on the children.
In the final days of the Third World War that destroyed the Old World, the Taranis defeated Vanargand with its Soul Cannon, hurling its core far from its main body. Around the time this happened, Yurlungur activated the Reset, destroying the human race and sealing all of the Titano-Machina within the floating landmasses. The Taranis was also sealed, swallowed whole by a cavern.

  +
The kids arrive and reunite, where they meet again Muscat, who show them the Taranis being kept as it being investigated, here they meet Muscat's father and younger sister, Shayne and Vanilla, after that, Boron enters the Taranis alongside Britz, Hanna, Mei and Socks, only to be captured, the Taranis escapes on it's own, and before they realize they find out that the Muscat family's house was destroyed during the rampage.
The Taranis' AI, Jeanne, was split into two halves, an older, more logical voice on the radio that was nonetheless overwhelmed with the desire to kill Vanargand once more, and a younger, more empathetic hologram of light that put the lives of her crew first.

  +
The kids enter the Tarascus who was rebuilt too, only to discover that is run by Hax, now and AI, despite this, he tells the kids that they have a bigger threat to deal with, the kids go, and fight tanks who are being controlled by a flesh-like moss who are attacking the city.
<u>The Bringer of War</u>
Consumed by the desire to prove herself, the Radio Woman created the legend of the Steel Devil (the Taranis) and the Lost God (Vanargand), and manipulated Shvein Hax to awaken Vanargand once more so she could kill it again, making her wholly responsible for the tragedies and catastrophes of the game. These manipulations also led to the Bermans building their own Devil on Hax's orders, the Tarascus. It then called the children together to pilot the tank and coaxed them to pursue the Berman army in order to save their families. Her true motivations were revealed once they faced the Tarascus, showing her true colors as a sadist thirsting to defeat her old enemy.

  +
Meanwhile Hanne wakes up and meets the kid, who tells her, he is going to destroy all of this world in anger, only to realize to Malt and the rest was able to follow him, not wanting to lose, he puts Mei in the Soul Cannon, planning to use her to get rid of the other kids.
<u>A Savior Once Again</u>
Throughout the Taranis' journey, the Girl of Light made several appearances urging the children not to fight. However, because the children wanted to save their families, they had no choice but to keep fighting. In the wake of the fights with the Tarascus and Britz, the Girl of Light finally confronted her counterpart, forcing the latter to admit that she still cared for the children and that they were one. This finally led to the two reuniting into the true Jeanne and guiding the children in order to save Gasco.

  +
Hax, sensing this, does the same, putting Malt as a sacrifice to win, much to Malt's horror before dying, he sees his sister being sacrificed, only for the blast of the two tanks, to fuse, destroying everyone all together.
The Taranis' final fate differs depending on the ending. In the bad ending, the Taranis is unable to defend against the Vanargand's explosion and is wrecked by the subsequent impact with one of the neighboring islands. In the normal ending, Jeanne despairs over having sacrificed one of the children and eventually collapses into dust. Canonically the Taranis rests peacefully in the remains of old Paresia and the Vanargand, with Jeanne having finally faded away, leaving the future to the children...

  +
Malt wakes up, and meets the Maestro, saying that is too early for Malt die, confused he asks who he is, the Maestro tells him, he is the one in charge of the timeline, telling him, his survival is dangerous and each one ends with Malt in pain, showing one where he was the sole survivor, angry he demands answers, only for the Maestro to leave.
Alas, while Jeanne had no place in that future, this was not the end of the Taranis' journey.

  +
Waking up, Malt is happy to be back, much to the confusion of his friends, the kid controlling the Taranis also realizes what happened, and amused, says he won't let the Maestro steal his chance of revenge, choosing to put Mei in the Soul Cannon again, however this time, Malt yells at Mei to wake up, which causes Mei to break the chamber of the Soul Cannon.
<u>The Devil of Steel</u>
One year after the sundering of Gasco, the rebuilding government of the country retrieved the Taranis and the Tarascus from the Vanargand's wreck, and brought them both to the new capital of Gasco, Pharaoh.

  +
The kids discover that they might be able to get Mei back by bumping into the Taranis, which the kids do, allowing Hax to teleport her back, the boy decides to retreat and go find a secret weapon he once heard, as the kids celebrate they realize that Vanilla snuck into the Tarascus in secret.

Revision as of 02:31, 13 December 2023

Fugaspoiler "EH?"

This article contains Fuga: Melodies of Steel spoilers, continue at your own risk.

The Fuga: Melodies of Steel manga is a series that, initially, retells the main story of the original game up until the aftermath of the battle against Pretzel. The rest of the manga will delve deeper into characters & present new scenes[1]. It is illustrated by mangaka Takafumi Adachi.

Serialization began on December 13th, 2021, with each chapter being uploaded to Famitsu's website for free viewing every two weeks. KADOKAWA will publish volumes as ebooks. It is currently only available in Japanese. The last chapter of the original game was released in June 6, 2023.

The manga will also adapt the events of the sequel in the next two volumes[2]. The first chapter was released in July 4, 2023.

Summary

The story begins where the game does - When Petit Mona is invaded by the Berman Empire. Malt Marzipan along with the other children of the village follow their radio's instructions of finding & riding the Taranis.

This "maestro" presents Fuga as if it were a musical performance and welcomes the reader to the next "Melodies of Steel".
